You Exist To…
There are many important questions that people have asked throughout history - Where did I come from? Where will I go when I die? What is my purpose? Why is there suffering? Why do we experience both good and evil? These questions need answers, and, thankfully, Scripture provides the answers we need to these imposing questions.
One question we need to answer is Why are we here? Some people don’t seem to think much about this question, but it’s an undeniably important one. Why do you and I exist? What is our purpose? In short, each and every one of us on this planet exists to bring glory to the Lord - whether we realize it or not. He is at work in all of us to carry out His grand plan and to bring Himself the glory He is due.
However, for the believer, there is a purpose that we are called to more specifically. In Matthew 28:18-20 we read this “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age’.” This command given by Jesus to the disciples applies to all who believe and follow Him. Their mission was to go and make disciples. Wherever they were, that was their main goal, and is now ours today. To share the good news that has been given and then baptize and teach those who believe.
In Romans 1:16, Paul declares that he is “unashamed of the Gospel for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” When we recognize that the gospel (the good news of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection) is the power of God for salvation and then consider the command to go and make disciples, we should see that our purpose as believers must be to proclaim the gospel. We have been given so much through the wonderful grace and love of our Savior, and our responsibility is to share that grace and love with the world around us. Yes, we do this out of duty and obedience to our Lord, but we also do this out of love for Him and because of how greatly we have been loved.
If you are looking for a “sign” to share the gospel with that neighbor across the street, or that friend, or acquaintance, here it is. As believers, you and I have a common purpose: we exist to proclaim the gospel, to give the good news that is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. May you and I be like Paul and remain unashamed of the gospel and aware that we exist to proclaim it.
You have been given a gift that brings salvation, and your Lord and Savior has commanded you to share it and teach people about Him. So, go! Live out your purpose, understanding that you exist to proclaim the gospel. It is a glorious calling and purpose, one we are to live out boldly!
