What Do We Value?
What guides you in your life? What helps you make decisions? Why do you choose that action over another? We could all say that our values play a major role in how we make decisions in our lives. Our values guide us. They help us stay on track. The Cambridge Dictionary says it like this: “Values are the core beliefs, guiding principles, and internal standards that help a person decide what is right, important, and worthwhile. They act as a personal compass.”
The values of our church are a compass for us as an organization. The Bible and our statement of faith communicate the content of our doctrine, but our values describe what kind of culture we strive to create here at Arrowhead. No one perfectly lives by the values they have set, and our church is no exception. These values are a call to action for us. We want to do better at fostering these ideas within our church culture.
Read through our values. If you are a part of Arrowhead, ask yourself how you can help the church live them out. Consider changes that you can make as you gather with your church family. Also consider how you can live out these values when you are not with the gathered church.
Welcome Home // Grace
This is a church for everybody. Failures are never final, and our Father always welcomes us home. The cross means we are free and we all come in the same door. We believe there is no problem in life that following Jesus cannot solve. We work to make this place feel like home — where people know they are wanted, welcomed, and worth pursuing. Hospitality is not an event or a program; it is who we are.
Laugh Out Loud // Joy
We are people of good news, so we smile. We have cast our burdens on the Lord and are free to enjoy Him and one another. We believe the best, celebrate first, laugh often, and play hard — because what could be more exciting than changing the world?
Giving Is Gaining // Generosity
We are stewards, not owners. God gives extravagantly to us, so it is our privilege to trust Him to provide for us by giving to others. We sacrifice to war against our selfishness.
See Good, Say Good // Honor
The Bible says we should outdo one another in showing honor. If we see somebody doing good, we say it. If we admire something about a brother or sister, we say it. Enough working to gain approval from others — we give approval to others.
Live Sent // Mobilization
We do not wait for people to come to us. We go across the street and around the world to them. Our goal is not merely to gather an audience but to raise an army. We are focused on developing disciple-making missionaries in our community and for the nations, in this generation and the next.
Grounded and Free // Word and Spirit
We hold tightly to Scripture, theology, and even tradition. We are serious about doctrine and worshipping God through knowing His written Word. Salvation, healed marriages, lifelong disciples, miracles, freedom from sin and addiction — none of these are possible by our own effort or ingenuity. We must desperately seek the Holy Spirit because He alone can do what we are after. So we make room to listen to His leading, we yield to His work among us, and we hold fast to the conviction that apart from Him, we can do nothing.
As you have heard many times, our desire is to help you take your next steps with Jesus. After reading these values, maybe implementing one of them in your own walk needs to be your next step. Maybe you need some help in doing that; I want to offer the staff and elders of this church as resources to help you navigate these next steps. Some steps are harder than others; there is no shame in asking for help.
