Recommended Reading

Throughout history, God has gifted men and women to write great works for the good of His people. While only one book, the Bible, is inspired (God-breathed) and inerrant (possessing no errors), there are many books which can be helpful as we explore who God is, how He works, and how we ought to respond. Charles Spurgeon once advised the congregants of Metropolitan Tabernacle to “visit many good books, but live in the Bible.”

As we read works from faithful Christians, examining what they present in light of God’s eternal, unchanging word, there is much we can gain. Here are a few books that our staff at Arrowhead Church - Greeneville would recommend to any Christian, along with a brief explanation of why they find it so helpful.

Lee Brown (Lead Pastor): Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald Whitney

“This book helped me so much to develop healthy disciplines in walking with the Lord. It is clear and easy to read. It can be a help to the seasoned believer or the new believer.”

- Pastor Lee

Chris Shumate (Pastor of Adult Discipleship): Knowing God by J.I. Packer

“Packer helps us to understand not only how great God is but how great a privilege it is to know Him personally. He explores the difference between knowing about God and truly knowing Him on a personal level.”

- Pastor Chris

Brooks Gray (Worship Leader): Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

“Mere Christianity is a classic. It is a great book to get people thinking through the why of what they believe.”

- Pastor Brooks

* This book was also mentioned as a recommendation by three other staff members.

Harrison Nasekos (Director of Students): Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper

“This book helps to put into perspective the life we are called to and the joy we are called to as believers. It shines a light on the life many people settle for and how many waste the gifts and calling God has given us, while directing us to fulfill the life God has called us to.”

- Harrison

John Combs (Director of Kids): The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness by Timothy Keller

“This book briefly examines humility in the Christian life. It reveals that true, gospel-centered humility is not about thinking less of oneself, but rather, it is simply thinking of ourselves less and putting others first. It demonstrates how service to others increases our joy in Christ.”

- John

Liz Raith (Director of Women’s Ministry): Desiring God by John Piper

“As Piper always says, ‘God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him,’ and this book teaches us how to do this (learning satisfaction in God).”

- Liz

Jessica Martin (Administrative Assistant): Seeing Green by Tilly Dillehay

“[This book] thoughtfully and compassionately exposes the often-unnoticed sin of envy and comparison that quietly shapes much of modern life, including within the church. Rather than approaching the topic with heaviness, Tilly Dillehay gently yet clearly helps readers recognize how discontent can take root in everyday life – especially in a culture shaped by social media, success culture, and constant comparison.”

- Jessica
